The year in shape
CSSE is a combined English-and-Maths paper with an extended writing element — distinctly different from GL or CEM, and not adequately prepared for by either.
The four schools split into two pairs by location: the Colchester pair (CRGS, CCHSG) and the Chelmsford pair (KEGS, CCHS). Catchment matters within each pair.
Term-by-term plan
Autumn term. Through autumn term, focus on CSSE-specific practice with the consortium's own past papers. Generic 11+ workbooks are unhelpful for CSSE preparation.
Spring term. In spring, introduce the extended writing component seriously. Weekly 25-minute creative-writing pieces with adult feedback are the highest-leverage CSSE preparation.
Summer term & holiday. Through summer, sit full timed combined papers fortnightly. The combined-paper format is genuinely different and requires its own practice rhythm.
Topics to prioritise
Highest-leverage topics: comprehension inference (heavy in CSSE), extended writing structure, and harder maths word problems. CSSE Maths is shorter than GL but proportionally harder.
Common mistakes parents make this year
The most common parent mistake is preparing with GL Essex-area papers rather than CSSE. They are not the same test.
Signs to look for
Signs the year is going well: child can produce a coherent 25-minute extended writing piece, scores in the upper half on past CSSE papers, and is comfortable with the combined-paper structure. If these signs are present, the year is going well; if they are absent, the issue is rarely intelligence — it is usually pacing, format unfamiliarity or the wrong tutoring relationship. Identify which and adjust deliberately.
